As politicians returned to the Prince Edward Island Province House for the first time in more than a decade this week, they received a royal congratulations. King Charles III penned a letter celebrating the reopening of the legislature, which has undergone a massive preservation and renovation project since 2014. The building originally opened in 1847 and was the site of the 1864 negotiations that eventually led to the founding of Canada. “I have the fondest memories of my visits to Province House in 1983 and again in 2014, which gave me a particular appreciation of the very special place it holds in the history and life of Prince Edward Island and, indeed, of Canada as a whole,” the king said in the letter. “I was particularly interested to read about the talented craftspeople who carried out the work, with many of them a credit to the training they received locally on Prince Edward Island. “The collective effort involved in preserving such a significant example of built heritage and built identity is commendable, and the achievements and lessons learned can inspire many such efforts to come.” With files from CTV News Atlantic’s Natalie Lombard For more P.E.I. news, visit our dedicated provincial page.
