The Director of the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) have charged an RCMP Officer in Nova Scotia with sexual assault. The SiRT received a referral from the RCMP on Nov. 7, 2024, after a female alleged she was sexually assaulted by one of their officers in May 2024. The female and the officer are known to each other. The investigation began that day, according to a release from the SiRT. As a result of the investigation, RCMP Const. William McNutt was charged with sexual assault on Monday. Const. McNutt will appear before the Nova Scotia provincial court in Shubenacadie on Aug. 11. The N.S. RCMP suspended Const. McNutt without pay in January 2024 for separate allegations of sexual misconduct. “These additional criminal charges against Const. McNutt are extremely alarming and distressing. We’re fully cooperating with SiRT, and an internal code of conduct process is ongoing,” Dennis Daley, commanding officer of the Nova Scotia RCMP said in a statement. “The RCMP takes all allegations of misconduct seriously, and our employees are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that exceeds the high expectations Canadians rightly have of us,” the statement continued. SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of public interest that are a result of the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
