The first nine holes of a new golf course at the prestigious Fox Harb’r Resort just outside of Wallace, N.S., opened Wednesday, marking the completion of phase one of a four-phase project. The project, which is three years in the making, is expected to significantly boost tourism in the area. Steven Joyce, CEO of Fox Harb’r, anticipates attracting a much wider audience. “With the two courses, we’re anticipating it will draw golfers as a destination course,” he said. Kevin Toth, president of the resort, projects a doubling of the current 16,000 annual golfers once both courses are complete. Stephen Leahey, a Fox Harb’r social member, highlighted the broader economic benefits. “Think of the jobs that are going to come here, think of the new buildings and housing; this is something really unique and good for North Cumberland County,” he said. Peter and Jennifer Jobe, long-time members from Moncton who have played numerous world-class courses, were equally impressed. “We’ve been fortunate to play Pebble Beach, Old Head, we’ve been very fortunate to play all the world-class courses, and this takes no second seat,” they said. The course’s coastal location on the Northumberland Strait presented unique challenges and opportunities. “It certainly presents some challenges with the wind and weather that we get here in Fox Harbour,” course developer Doug Carrick said. “What a fabulous setting to build a golf course on, golf really originated by the ocean. It’s nice to do a traditional links course.” The project employed roughly 65 contractors. While the first nine holes are now open, the remaining 27 holes are still under construction.
