From pumpkin smashing to cider pressing, the Hootenanny and Pumpkin Smash at Common Roots Urban Farm in Halifax is celebrating 15 years of growing community. “Were celebrating 15 years of Common Roots and it is also just a celebration of the harvest season,” says Hillary Lindsay, manager of Common Roots Urban Farm. The free family-friendly event on Sunday included live music, free food and fun activities for all ages including the jack-o’-lantern smash. “People can bring their jack-o’-lanterns to smash for compost for the garden’s next year,” says Lindsay. Visitors could also take a 15 years of CRUF Trivia Tour, step into the Memory Box Shed for a slide show of favourite photos and print their own CRUF memorabilia merch. Lindsay says she is happy with the large turnout. “It’s awesome. It is exactly what I hoped for. We have hundreds of people here having fun outside and connecting to food and community.” For more Nova Scotia news, visit our dedicated provincial page
