Halifax has introduced a new policy that will ban photography, video recordings and broadcasting in recreation facility change rooms. The policy applies to any form of photographic or digital recording technology, according to a news release from the municipality. Along with change rooms, the recording technology cannot be used in washrooms and registration areas where personal or financial information could be visible. “Individuals who do not comply with the policy will be directed to stop recording and may be asked to leave the facility. Serious or repeated violations may result in further action,” the release reads. The policy permits photography and video recordings in public recreation areas such as arenas, gymnasiums, multi-purpose rooms, rinks, parks, sports fields and facility lobbies. People who want to record in pool or fitness areas such as weight rooms will need approval from facility staff. Residents who are uncertain if recordings are permitted in certain areas are asked to speak with staff. “The policy is intended to proactively address privacy, safety and comfort concerns while recognizing that residents may wish to capture photos and videos during recreational activities,” the release reads.
