Some Dartmouth, N.S., residents got together Monday night for an information session on a controversial project in the area. More than 100 people gathered at the Mic Mac Amateur Aquatic Club to get an update on the Dartmouth Cove infill project. Atlantic Road Construction and Paving was set to start the project, which drew heavy criticism from the public and politicians. Last June, Transport Canada began steps to rescind the company’s approval to dump approximately 100,000 cubic metres of pyritic slate into the cove. Two months later, Halifax council voted to consider bylaw amendments to stop or limit future lot developments in the area and is now asking for input from the public before doing so. “Our last meeting was back in June, and this is a follow-up from that June meeting to let people know what’s gone on in the last several months, and to make sure they know this is really key. We need bylaw protection from the municipality, and this is that first step in order to get that,” said Friends of Dartmouth Cove founding member Jill Brogan.
