Community raises $3,600 for Halifax dog whose wheelchair was stolen

A crowd-funding campaign raises enough money to get Smidgen the dog a new wheelchair.

A Halifax dog whose wheelchair was recently stolen could soon have a new transportation setup thanks to the generosity of the community.

In April, Smidgen, a 10-year-old Chihuahua mix who was left paralyzed from the waist down six years ago, had emergency surgery. A few days later, her wheelchair was stolen off a porch, according to her owner Lisa Lavoie.

“I don’t know who would take a little dog’s wheelchair or what the use would be,” Lavoie previously told CTV News Atlantic. “We looked just to see if it was kids. We looked around to see if somebody just took it and put it in a dumpster just for fun. We looked all over the place.”

Stephanie Gustys organized a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for Smidgen and it’s already collected $3,600, which is enough money to replace the wheelchair and pay for some of the dog’s medical bills.
