Cape Breton University (CBU) is adding another health-care diploma to its list of educational programs. CBU president and vice-chancellor David Dingwall announced the new masters of health-care leadership program at Nova Scotia Province House on Thursday. There are already 26 students enrolled who began classes at the Sydney campus last week. The program will train the next generation of health-care leaders, who will help the province navigate complex workforce issues facing the health-care system. “This is another situation where people are saying, ‘Hey, we need some health-care leadership and people that can navigate who can be innovative and finding the solutions,’” said Dingwall. “And these will be stars in terms of our health-care situation.” It’s a 16-month degree where graduates can pursue careers in health-care administration, health services management, telehealth program management and regulatory affairs across Nova Scotia’s health-care system. “Strong health-care systems depend on strong leadership,” said Minister of Health and Wellness Michelle Thompson. “This new program will help prepare talented leaders with the skills needed to improve how care is delivered, support health-care teams and build a more connected, responsive health system for Nova Scotians.” Dingwall says another new program is in the works for the Cape Breton medical school. He believes this is another example of the schools listening to the needs of the people and the province. “We are proud to be developing programs that align with government priorities, workforce needs and opportunities for economic and social growth across Nova Scotia,” said Dingwall.
