A new campaign is looking to restore and preserve a local landmark in Lunenburg, N.S. The Lunenburg Academy Foundation recently launched the “Under This Roof” campaign, which aims to raise $2.3 million over 36 months for restoration and preservation work on the Academy’s roof. The Lunenburg Academy, also known locally as the Castle on the Hill, was built in 1895 and sits adjacent to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Old Town Lunenburg. The Academy is also recognized as a National Historic Site. Serving as a public school until 2012, the Academy is now a community cultural and educational centre showcasing 19th century education and history. “The Lunenburg Academy is one of the most recognizable and important buildings in our community, and protecting it is about much more than preserving bricks, wood and shingles,” said Lunenburg Mayor Jamie Myra. “It is about protecting a place that has played an important role in the life of Lunenburg for generations.” The project will focus on the north and east sections of the roof, addressing worn or damaged shingles, repairing areas where water can enter, and improving ventilation and moisture management beneath the roof. According to the foundation, roofing materials will be selected to compliment the Academy’s existing appearance, and once complete, the work will protect the academy from further deterioration. A total of $1.27 million has been raised for the project by three partners, including: “The Lunenburg Academy is a key landmark in the town of Lunenburg and a source of pride for the community,” said Jessica Fancy, member of parliament for South Shore—St. Margarets. “The federal investment of $300,000 supports critical roof replacement work, helping safeguard this remarkable national historic site and the cultural, educational, and tourism benefits it brings to the region. By investing in places like the Lunenburg Academy, we are helping preserve our heritage while supporting vibrant communities.” Donations for the campaign can be made through the Lunenburg Academy Foundation’s website.
