After being told that smooth drives along one of Saint John’s most travelled roads would return in August, motorists in the Port City will have to wait a little bit longer for lane closures to end. In an email to CTV News Atlantic, New Brunswick Department of Transportation and Infrastructure communications officer Jacob MacDonald says paving work on the approaches of the Saint John Harbour Bridge will continue until Sept. 4. When the summer lane closures were first announced in June, the work was expected to be done by the first week of August. The reason given for the extended timeline was scheduling issues and added work to replace curbs and gutters. “The project’s kick-off was delayed this spring at the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure’s request, and on behalf of the City of Saint John, to allow for the transportation of oversized/overweight loads from Port Saint John,” MacDonald says in an email. “Despite work beginning in early July to remove deteriorated curb and gutters along the roadway, it was determined during the onset that more sections had deteriorated and also required replacement. With much of this work taking place in the median, lane closures have been required in both directions to ensure the safety of both the workers and the public.” CTV News has asked the department for an update on when all work on the bridge will be completed, as well its current budget, and is awaiting a response. MacDonald says the current work leading up to the bridge is separate from the Saint John Harbour Bridge rehabilitation project. The 58-year-old bridge has been undergoing the phased refurbishing project since 2021. Lane closures and detours and expected to continue into 2027.
