A Sunny Corner, N.B., RCMP officer has been charged with choking following an investigation into an alleged intimate partner assault by the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT). SiRT says it received a referral from the RCMP about allegations an officer had assaulted his intimate partner on April 20. The Miramichi Police Force initially responded to the call on April 17, according to a SiRT news release. Following the investigation, Const. James MacMillan was charged with assault, assault by choking and unsafe storage of a firearm on Monday. MacMillan will appear in Miramichi provincial court on Aug. 24. SiRT handles investigations into matters involving intimate partner violence, serious injury, sexual assault and death that may have arisen from the actions of police officers in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
