The City of Bathurst, N.B., will soon have more affordable housing options following a partnership between the provincial and federal governments. The two levels of government are spending more than $7 million to create 62 housing units, which are expected to be finished this spring. The province says 32 of the new units will be supported by rental supplements from the New Brunswick Housing Corporation. “We know the need for housing is urgent in our province, especially in the Chaleur region,” said David Hickey, minister responsible for the New Brunswick Housing Corporation, in a news release Monday. “Having a safe and stable place to call home is essential to leading a productive life, and I am so pleased to partner with our federal colleagues, and our community partners, to bring these projects to fruition.” The two housing projects receiving funding are: the Advantage Apartments project, at 275 King Ave., which involves converting office space into 18 one-bedroom units Projet Assomption, located at 2144 Vallée Lourdes Dr., which will turn a former convent into 44 housing units, half of which will be for people aged 55 and over. The project will also include common space and a cafeteria for tenants. “We warmly thank the Town of Belle-Baie and the City of Bathurst, as well as all our partners – provincial, municipal, community and private – whose collaboration has made these initiatives possible,” said Acadie-Bathurst MP Serge Cormier. “Together, we are building a future where every family and every individual can find a safe and welcoming place to call home.” The New Brunswick Housing Corporation is spending more than $2.4 million in the projects, while the federal government is spending more than $4.7 million.
