Crews continue their cleanup efforts on Highway 1 in Saint John, N.B., following an accident Tuesday morning that resulted in a fuel leak. Saint John police say they were notified of the accident between a SUV and a dump truck at 8:36 a.m. Tuesday morning. Staff Sgt. Shawna Fowler says the cause of the accident remains under investigation. One person was taken to hospital due to the accident and is in stable condition. There is no word on what vehicle the injured individual was travelling in. The eastbound lane of Highway 1 heading into Saint John from Lorneville remains closed due to the spill. Detours have been put in place while cleanup work continues. There is no word on when the highway will reopen to traffic. The accident resulted in an unspecified amount of diesel leaking from the dump truck’s fuel tank. Vicky Lutes with the Department of Environment told CTV News Atlantic in an email an inspector from the department is on scene assisting in the cleanup that has been initiated by the responsible party. A vacuum truck and sand were used in the cleanup, which Lutes says is standard in these types of spills. She says there have been no noted impacts to the area, which includes nearby wetlands.
