George H. LeBlanc, a former mayor of Moncton, N.B., has died. His obituary says he had a “long battle” with corticobasal syndrome, a rare progressive neurodegenerative disease. He died at The Moncton Hospital on Tuesday at the age of 71. LeBlanc earned a law degree from the University of New Brunswick, going on to become partner at Cox & Palmer. He also served three terms as a Moncton city councillor and was mayor from 2008 to 2016, including during the 2014 shootings that killed three Mounties. “George’s legacy may indeed be in his fulfilling the vision of revitalizing the downtown core, and the construction of the Avenir Centre. In a beautiful full-circle event, George—who established the Order of Moncton to honor exceptional citizens—became a recipient of the prestigious award himself in 2024,” his obituary reads. LeBlanc is survived by his wife Kathy, son Jordan, daughter Brittany and five grandchildren. His family says he loved skiing, Bruce Springsteen and vacationing in Caissie Cape.
