Windy weather cancels, reschedules ferry crossings in Atlantic Canada

The month of December is off to a wet and windy start in Atlantic Canada and it’s affecting ferry crossings in the region.

Prince Edward Island-Nova Scotia ferry

All sailings between Wood Islands, P.E.I., and Caribou, N.S., scheduled for Monday are cancelled.

Northumberland Ferries says it is due to the high winds forecast in the Northumberland Strait.

Newfoundland-Nova Scotia ferry

Marine Atlantic says it has cancelled the following Monday crossings due to adverse weather conditions:

• 11:45 a.m. North Sydney, N.S., to Port aux Basques, N.L.
• 11:45 a.m. Port aux Basques to North Sydney
• 11:15 p.m. North Sydney to Port aux Basques
• 11:30 p.m. Port aux Basques to North Sydney

The ferry service has also rescheduled four ferry crossings on Tuesday due to the weather:

• The 12:30 p.m. North Sydney to Port aux Basques crossing will now depart at 9 a.m.
• The 11:45 a.m. Port aux Basques to North Sydney crossing will now depart at 9 a.m.
• The 11:15 p.m. North Sydney to Port aux Basques crossing will now depart at 7 p.m.
• The 11:30 p.m. Port aux Basques to North Sydney crossing will now depart at 7 p.m.

Saint John-Digby ferry

There are currently no travel advisories for the ferry that travels between Saint John, N.B., and Digby, N.S.

Weather warnings

More travel impacts may be possible later this week.

Environment Canada has issued special weather statements for southeastern areas of New Brunswick, and the entirety of Nova Scotia and P.E.I., ahead of a weather system Tuesday into Wednesday.

A mix of snow, rain and strong winds is expected.
