Man charged after plaques stolen from Fredericton cenotaph

The arrival of the plaques at the Fredericton cenotaph was met with a loud round of applause on Remembrance Day.

A man has been charged in connection with the theft of brass plaques from a cenotaph in Fredericton.

Police say the man turned himself in to police on Thursday morning.

The suspect was released on a promise to appear in court on Dec. 15 to face charges of possession of stolen property.

Police say he must also abide by strict conditions.

Three plaques containing the names of First, Second and Korean War veterans were stolen from the provincial cenotaph in October and sold for scrap metal.

Some of the plaques surfaced at a metal recycling business, but the names had been ground off.

Two of the plaques were replaced and arrived at the cenotaph just in time for Wednesday’s Remembrance Day service, although there wasn’t enough time to mount them.

Work is underway to repair the third plaque.

The public has donated about $4,000 to be used for upkeep of the cenotaph and to install a security system.
