Haunted Halifax: Does Alexander Keith still roam the halls of his brewery?

For centuries, Alexander Keith’s Brewery has welcomed thirsty patrons through its doors. But does something sinister roam the halls of the historic watering hole?

The author of Halifax Haunts says there is evidence Alexander Keith may still watch over his beloved brewery more than 140 years after his death.

“There’s a tunnel underneath here that Keith had built from his house to the brewery. I think he just wanted to check on his, on the workings of the brewery, whatever the weather,” says Steve Vernon.

“People have heard footsteps running through there and then they’ve heard footsteps slowly walking.”

Vernon says some people have even reported hearing the ‘squeak, squeak, squeak’ of a handcart, as if someone were wheeling a big keg of beer down the hall.

Brewery staff have been spooked by the sight of a man at the bar, and a woman wearing a dress from the 19^th century has been seen walking through the brewery, before disappearing into a wall.

Determined to crack the case, CTV’s Suzette Belliveau recently joined a team of paranormal investigators to see what spirits lurk in the halls of the brewery. The team used voice recorders and instruments that measure temperature and electromagnetic fields to see if they could detect a paranormal presence.

At one point, the EMF meter lights up, flashing shades of green, yellow and red.

“That’s amazing. That’s actually quite rare,” says paranormal investigator Darcy O’Neill. “We don’t get that quite often.”

Brewery staff say music in the old pub seems to trigger the spirits, so one investigator pulls out a guitar and starts singing a traditional Maritime tune.

Belliveau, who is sitting on a bench nearby, insists she feels a rush of cold air linger at her left side while the song plays. The temperature also drops and soon all EMF meters are going off.

“It’s cold over here,” notes one investigator.

“I’ve never seen that before,” says another.

A night that started slowly for investigator Earl Lattie and his team, quickly escalates, leaving them with more questions than answers.

“Because of the history of the building I was really hoping that we would get some evidence, but I definitely wasn’t expecting to get what we got tonight,” says Lattie. “I don’t think any of us were.”
