The Canada Border Services Agency says one of 30 alleged war criminals has been deported from Canada while a second suspect is no longer in the country.

The CBSA said on Sunday that Manuel De La Torre Herrera, 57, has been removed from the country following his arrest in Toronto on July 25. He is suspected of involvement in war crimes or crimes against humanity as part of a brutal regime in Peru.

De La Torre Herrera is the first of the five men recently arrested on such allegations to be deported. The CBSA said in an email to CTVNews.ca he has been handed over to authorities in Peru.

The CBSA also said another alleged war criminal, Illandaridevage Kulatunga of Sri Lanka, is under arrest in Florida.

Earlier this month, the CBSA posted a list of 30 alleged war criminals who are thought to be in Canada. Five arrests have since been made based on tips from the public.

The other four remain in custody in Canada and have either undergone or are awaiting a processing by the Immigration and Review Board.

"We are sending a strong message to those who are in our country illegally: we will not back down in our efforts to find and remove them from Canada," said Public Safety Minister Vic Toews. "We continue to take the necessary measures to protect the safety and security of our families and communities."
