CALGARY - An Air Canada jumbo jet with 279 people on board had to make an unscheduled landing in Calgary after a flight attendant smelled an "acrid odour."

Flight 34 was on its way from Vancouver to Toronto on Sunday afternoon when the incident occurred.

Wayne Reimer of the Calgary Airport Authority says the Boeing 777 landed safely without incident.

Air Canada spokesman John Reber says he doesn't know yet whether the odour smelled like smoke, but he notes the flight attendant noticed the smell in the aircraft's forward galley.

Reber says the captain decided to land as a precaution.

Maintenance staff are investigating what may have caused the smell, and Air Canada is brining another plane into Calgary to fly the passengers to Toronto.
