NeuroMetrix, Inc. announced Wednesday that it will unveil a new wearable pain relief device called Quell at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), taking place Jan. 6 to 9 in Las Vegas.

The gadget will employ NeuroMetrix's proprietary non-invasive neurostimulation technology to neutralize chronic pain, says the company, specializing in neuropathic pain that comes from diabetes and lower back problems.

Quell received FDA clearance in June of this year for use without a prescription.

Said to be lightweight, it can be worn during daytime activity and it's possible to wear during sleep. An accompanying app allows users to track their pain therapy.

Quell will be available for purchase by the second quarter of 2015, but the company has not yet said how much it will cost. Other details such as how big it is and how it is to be worn are being kept under wraps.

The race is on to overthrow Big Pharma from its throne in the domain of pain relief.

Thimble Bioelectronics is at work on a wearable patch that relieves pain using transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy, a method that's well known in the medical community to relieve chronic pain.
