A New Brunswick pro wrestler and his wife put on a grand show by getting married inside the ring in front of a crowd of 300 friends, family and wrestling fans Thursday.

“It was like pretty much the perfect combination of what we both wanted,” bride Emily Doucet told CTV Atlantic. “It was pretty much the perfect night.”

Groom Eric Doucet, who goes by his stage name Markus “the vegan” Burke, has been a pro wrestler for more than a decade. He told CTV Atlantic that when he proposed to his girlfriend of five years, he thought this championship unification was the perfect way to bring his two passions together.

The couple was joined by a crazy cast of characters and got married in the midst of smashed cake, jelly beans, thumb tacks and shattered cinderblocks.

Emily Doucet, who is usually behind the scenes, also made her wrestling debut as the kidnapped bride in the performance.

“I won’t regret it. It’s going to be something I look back on and I’m proud of doing,” said Emily. “It was cool to be a part of his world for a night.”

“I thought it was outrageous,” her sister Elaine Gillis said. “She played the perfect damsel in distress.”

The couple will hold a second, more intimate ceremony this weekend, but say this was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

“My emotions are in check, I would say 95 per cent of the time, but tonight I felt myself tweaking in (my heart),” Doucet added.
