Meghan Markle’s wardrobe is yet again shining a light on Canadian brands, as Prince Harry and his bride-to-be made their first joint official public appearance since announcing their engagement.
Markle wore a navy blue ankle-length coat to the Terrence Higgins Trust charity fair for World AIDS Day in Nottingham, U.K. on Friday. Patricia Treble, Royals reporter for Write Royalty, confirmed that the double-buttoned coat is the 'Elodie' wool coat, a $790 piece by Montreal designer Mackage.
“[Mackage is] another Canadian line that she often wears,” Treble told CTVNews.ca in an email. “So, 100 per cent Canadian coats so far, with two appearances.”
Mackage’s communications director Hugo Thibault told The Canadian Press that the company’s website traffic increased approximately 500 per cent after photos emerged of Markle in the Elodie coat.
Thibault said that there were only four similar jackets left in Mackage’s online store at the time of Markle’s appearance – all of which quickly sold out.
Markle paired the coat with slick black-heeled boots, a classy turtleneck, a full-length camel-coloured skirt, and a burgundy, navy, and vanilla coloured purse.
Trebel says Markle’s skirt is from the U.K. brand Joseph, while her turtleneck is believed to be from Austrian fashion brand Wolford.
The “midi tote” worn by Markle is from Scottish luxury handbag company Strathberry; naturally, the design has already sold out.
“Interestingly, her purse has handles, like the Queen – both stylish and practical,” Treble said.
“Kate wears clutches, which can be awkward to hold when shaking hands and going on walkabouts.”
Markle has been spotted on numerous occasions wearing Canadian designers, including at the Invictus Games, where she wore a maroon dress by Canadian retailer Aritzia, and a matching leather jacket by Mackage.
At the couple’s engagement announcement on Monday, Markle wore a belted coat from Canadian knitwear label Line. The graceful white wrap coat sold out within hours of the announcement and has since been renamed “The Meghan.”
