Jada Pinkett Smith auditioned for 'Gotham' with a man on a leash.

The 43-year-old actress revealed that her audition process for the role of Fish Mooney was a little unconventional, after she shocked the executive producer Danny Cannon when she turned up in a long gown with a short wig and a young man on a leash.

Speaking at the 'Gotham' panel at PaleyFest, Pinkett Smith shared: "I said, 'Forget it, instead of talking about who Fish Mooney is, let me just show you. I went Method."

Despite playing a mob leader in the TV show, which airs on CTV, Pinkett Smith has previously spoken out about her own tough upbringing in Balitmore, Maryland.

Earlier this month she wrote on Facebook: "Half my life was surviving a war zone.

"There was a time all that loss felt like the norm."

The actress then added that she was glad that her own children - Jaden, 16, and Willow, 13, with her husband Will Smith - were saved from the same fate.

Pinkett Smithtold her fans: "I'm grateful for what I have survived ... Grateful I didn't become a statistic like I often thought I would. Grateful that my own children don't have to confront the loss and violence in their neighbourhood in the way their parents had to."
