A Vancouver Island cyclist performed a stunt more suited to the silver screen than a city street when faced with an oncoming truck.

Ladislav Cumpelik, 37, was biking to work near Victoria, B.C. when a truck passed him on Thursday.

He says the truck made a sudden, hard right turn, cutting him off and leaving him facing a fast-moving, oncoming vehicle.

"I didn't have enough speed to go right through underneath the truck and to the other side," he told CTV Vancouver Island from his hospital bed.

"So instead of being caught I grabbed onto his brake line and held on tight."

Cumpelik's helmet was wedged against an axle while his feet and backpack scraped along the ground.

Knowing the route well, Cumpelik realized there were speed bumps ahead and worried what would happen if the truck went over them as he clung underneath.

A motorist witnessed the incident and caught up to the unaware driver, signalling for him to stop.

The truck stopped after dragging Cumpelik nearly half a kilometre.

Cumpelik suffered a broken shoulder, cracked ribs, and road rash across his back, but no life threatening injuries.

Police say they're stunned by the sequence.

"This is like something out a movie," said Sgt. Ron Stewart, with Saanich police. "I've been doing this 25 years and I've never seen a guy so fortunate to not have severe injuries."
