A section of Highway 403 in Hamilton is blocked by water, mud and trees brought down by a mudslide on Friday morning.

All eastbound lanes of the 403 are blocked between Main Street East and York Boulevard.

Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt told CTV Toronto that the mud is more than half a metre deep in some places along the highway.

Schmidt said that OPP have shut down the Main Street East and York Boulevard on-ramps in the area until the debris can be cleared.

Officials from the Ministry of Transportation are heading to the scene.

According to Schmidt, the mudslide was caused by a broken water main.

In a message posted on Twitter at 1 p.m., OPP wrote that the closure is expected to last several hours.
