Gisele Michaud, who lost her youngest son after he was fatally wounded in Afghanistan, has been announced as this year's National Memorial (Silver) Cross Mother.

Master Cpl. Charles-Philippe Michaud, 28, was wounded after stepping on an improvised explosive devise while on patrol southwest of Kandahar City in 2009. He was transported to a hospital in Quebec City and died less than two weeks later.

Gisele will lay a wreath at the National War Memorial on Remembrance Day on behalf of all the Canadian mothers who lost a child while on active duty.

Since her son passed away, Michaud has honoured his memory by hosting large delegations from his former battalion in Edmundston, New Brunswick on the anniversary of his passing. Gisele Michaud, her husband and their eldest son also travelled to Kandahar in 2010.

Charles-Philippe Michaud joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 2000. He served in Bosnia, Lithuania and did two tours in Afghanistan, receiving numerous medals including the Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal and the General Campaign Star-International Security.
