A man who went for a stroll on the thin ice of the North Saskatchewan river found himself in hot water when he returned to shore -- a frustrated firefighter blasted the young man for putting himself and others in danger.

Capt. Wayne Grotski of Edmonton Fire Rescue delivered an expletive-filled tirade, while CTV Edmonton cameras captured the lecture.

"You know your stupidity cost us a lot of s***," Grotski passionately explains in the video. "What happens if you go through that ice? And now we gotta try to save your a** and we put ourselves in danger because we don't even know who you are but you're out there doing stupid s***."

"I didn't look at it that way," replies the man, dressed in a parka and tuque and wearing a backpack.

"I know you don't but now you will, will you not?" Grotski asks.

Firefighters arrived at the scene after receiving a call that a man was running on the ice towards the north shore of the wide river, looking confused.

When firefighters arrived, along with a cold-water rescue team, they yelled at the man to come to shore, and he complied.

Grotski said anyone who ventures onto the unstable river ice is taking a severe risk.

"The ice is very unsafe, it has different levels, could be thin, could be thick, could be right to water. You don't know where you step, you may die, fall in, and once you go under the ice there's no recovering you," Grotski said.
