A disturbingly violent incident was caught on camera Tuesday in Peterborough, Ont., believed to be associated with a road rage incident.
In an extended version of the video, taken around 11 a.m. Tuesday, a man can be seen striking a cyclist at least four times with a small club as he pins him to the ground beside a black Dodge Ram pickup truck.
When the driver realizes that he’s being filmed, he quickly gets up, pockets the club and shouts, “I tried to walk away!”
The camera then focuses on the blood-splattered face of the 74-year-old victim.
“Where am I bleeding?” he says, blood dripping down his head and white shirt.
A witness, who did not want to be identified, said the two men had been arguing before the driver of the truck started clubbing the cyclist.
“I felt like the man in the truck had every opportunity to leave,” the witness said. “Instead he got out of his vehicle.”
The witness said that a few people tried to keep the driver of the truck from leaving until police came, “but he slammed his door, scoffed at everyone and drove away.”
The assault allegedly stemmed from an argument that started as the two were both trying to make a left turn, police say.
“During the argument, the victim was assaulted and struck with a small club several times,” Peterborough police spokesperson Lauren Gilchrist told reporters. “As a result of the investigation, we were able to make an arrest in this incident.”
Police arrested David Fox, 65, of Peterborough, and charged him with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon. He is scheduled to appear in court in August.
CTV Toronto attempted to speak with Fox at his home. Although a black Dodge Ram pickup truck was in the driveway, there was no answer at the door on Friday.
