There were a few glitches along the way, however, when the vote count was delayed two hours because of an election system glitch.

2. Climate change summit: The debate is heating up ahead of the UN summit that gets underway in New York Tuesday. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has already said he will not attend the summit, drawing criticism from environmentalists. According to a new editorial in a respected journal, turning one's back on the issue is no way forward. "Effective communication may shift knowledge, attitudes and behaviour toward reducing the risks of climate change," the article says.

3. U.S. airstrikes in Syria: The United States and unnamed partner nations launched their first airstrikes against Islamic State targets in Syria overnight. They are the latest in the expanded U.S. campaign against the militants.

4. Duffy's case in court: Suspended sen. Mike Duffy should find out Tuesday, exactly when his case will go to trial. Duffy is facing 31 criminal charges in connection with alleged misspending of taxpayer dollars. His lawyer said last week that he hoped to set a trial date soon, but insisted that the case would not turn into "a political circus."

5. Bald eagle rescue: Recreational fisherman Don Dunbar made an unusual catch when he rescued a bald eagle from the water near Vancouver Island's Nanoose Bay. He took the eagle to a wildlife refuge and posted the remarkable video of the rescue on YouTube.
