Renovations on this GTA hospital will triple its size. Now you can get a preview of what it will look like
Preconstruction activities at the Mississauga Hospital are now well underway and the site, which is Canada’s largest hospital build, is expected to be mostly completed by 2033, with operations transitioning into the new facility in 2034. Once completed, it will be the largest teaching hospital in Canada.

Trillium Health Partners has set up a full-scale, immersive mock-up of the future site of the Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital and Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children as it works to shape the future of healthcare in Peel Region.
Created as part of the design process for the new hospitals, the Trillium HealthWorks Experience Centre, as its known, will be open until the summer of 2026.
Visits to this 20,000-square-foot “living lab,” which is located in a strip mall near Mississauga Hospital, are currently by invitation only. (Trillium Health Partners)
The reason for this simulated space is to proactively ensure that every detail about the new hospitals – from lighting and airflow to equipment layout and accessibility – is “safer, smarter, and ready for the community,” official say, with staff, patients, families, and partners at the centre of every decision.
The mock hospital is also a cost-saving measure, according to the healthcare network, as the Trillium HealthWorks Experience Centre “allows their teams to test and refine clinical spaces in real time through high-fidelity simulations ensuring the final hospital design delivers the best possible experience for patients and the care team while minimizing costly changes once construction begins.”
Further, the experience centre aims to integrate intelligent digital tools into every room, which officials say will help improve workflows and reduce administrative burden, enabling the care team to focus on delivering exceptional care. (Trillium Health Partners)
Trillium Health Partners officially broke ground on The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital and Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children on June 25.
Preconstruction activities are now well underway and the site, which is Canada’s largest hospital build, is expected to be mostly completed by 2033, with operations transitioning into the new facility in 2034.
Once completed, it will triple the size of the existing Mississauga Hospital at 100 Queensway W., just west of Hurontario Street, making it largest teaching hospital in Canada. (Trillium Health Partners)
Here is a sneak peek into some of the spaces and features within the Trillium HealthWorks Experience Centre:
Substations are centrally located hubs that support care teams with features like a pneumatic tube system connecting key hospital areas, smart boards for patient- and family-inclusive huddles, and digital care boards placed for staff use while maintaining patient privacy. (Trillium Health Partners)
At the future Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children, labour, birth, recovery and postpartum rooms provide private, family-centered spaces where patients can experience every stage of childbirth in one location. These rooms combine essential medical equipment with home-like amenities to support safety, comfort and bonding — part of 31 birthing rooms planned for Ontario’s first purpose-built hospital dedicated to women’s and children’s care. (Trillium Health Partners)
Among the many features of The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital/Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children is a new and expanded Emergency Department — which will be one of the largest in the province — designed to reduce wait times and improve the patient experience. It will include 103 treatment areas across seven zones, with four specialized trauma and resuscitation rooms, including several equipped for patients with airborne illnesses. These spaces are built for safety, infection control, and rapid response, with layouts informed by real-time simulations. (Trillium Health Partners)
The new hospital will feature 26 state-of-the-art operating rooms, including general, specialty, hybrid, and cardiac suites. General operating rooms are designed for efficiency and safety, with ceiling-mounted equipment systems that keep floors clear and improve staff mobility, and direct access to sterile supply rooms to streamline care. (Trillium Health Partners)
The Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children will include five dedicated birthing operating rooms, located steps away from the birthing suites for rapid access when surgery is needed. These larger, brighter spaces are designed to accommodate complex births — including multiple births — with room for full care teams and a support person. (Trillium Health Partners)
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit rooms are designed to support the family as well as the newborn in intensive care, including a medical grade fridge for breastmilk and a breastmilk warmer, and a sofa that pulls out into a full bed so parents can stay with their newborn. There is also a patient wardrobe for parents to place belongings. (Trillium Health Partners)
The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital and Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children will feature 120 critical care rooms across medical, surgical, neurosurgical, and cardiac units, designed to provide advanced care for the most seriously ill patients. These larger, private rooms include in-room dialysis, flexible overhead equipment for staff access, and ensuite washrooms with accessibility supports. Central charting stations with windows will help maintain staff sightlines, while blinds and privacy features will help ensure patient dignity. (Trillium Health Partners)
The new hospitals will feature more than 600 private medical-surgical rooms, each designed to enhance infection prevention, accessibility, and patient comfort. Every room includes a private bathroom with shower, handwashing sink, convertible sleep chair for loved ones, and integrated digital technology to support both care teams and patients. (Trillium Health Partners)
The mental health inpatient room is a private and calming space designed to support safety, dignity, and recovery. Features include a writable wall for self-expression, padded privacy partitions that can double as yoga mats, and surfaces patients can personalize with stickers — fostering creativity, comfort, and a sense of ownership. (Trillium Health Partners)
Outside each patient room, a digital sign will display real-time safety and infection control precautions. Built-in wall cupboards provide easy access to Personal Protective Equipment, alongside a charting station, optimizing space and workflow for care teams. (Trillium Health Partners)

It will also have advanced diagnostic imaging facilities, a modern pharmacy, and a leading-edge clinical laboratory, underground parking for patients and visitors, a faith, green spaces, and large windows. (Trillium Health Partners)
Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children, which is the first hospital if its kind in Ontario, will have 31 modern birthing suites and 53 postpartum beds, an expanded Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with couplet suites to keep parents and babies together when inpatient care is needed, 36 pediatric beds, including 12 dedicated mental health inpatient beds for children and youth — a first for the region.
It will also feature state-of-the-art surgical suites for specialized paediatric and maternal procedures, increased family friendly spaces including a dedicated paediatric zone in the new emergency department, and infant feeding rooms. (Trillium Health Partners)
