Tributes from artists across the world are being shared on social media in response to the death of three-year-old Alan Kurdi, whose lifeless body washed ashore on a Turkish beach Wednesday.

Images of the boy have placed a spotlight on the desperate plight of the hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing the country and other parts of the Middle East.

Alan, along with his five-year-old brother, Ghalib, and their mother, Rehanna, drowned after their overloaded boat flipped in the Aegean Sea. The Syrian refugees were attempting to cross from Turkey into Greece.

Using the hashtags #HumanityWashedAshore and #KiyiyaVuranInsanlik, many social media users expressed their anguish over the child's death and the perilous situation faced by refugees.
