Two pedestrians killed in collision south of The Pas

Two people are dead after being struck by a vehicle while walking along a highway in northern Manitoba.

RCMP said the collision happened Friday night on a section of road south of The Pas, leaving a 29-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman dead. Both were from Chemawawin Cree Nation.

Police said the two people had been passengers in a vehicle heading east on Highway 60. At one point, RCMP said the vehicle stopped on the side of the highway. The man and woman got out and started walking with the vehicle following behind them.

Another vehicle, driven by a 64-year-old man from The Pas, was driving west on the highway. RCMP said the driver failed to see the two people walking on the highway and hit them.

The drivers of both vehicles stayed and called police.

The man and woman were pronounced dead on the scene.

Mounties said speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors. The investigation is ongoing.
