Heat records in Manitoba smashed on Mother’s Day

A warm air mass hovering over Manitoba over the weekend helped a number of communities smash decades-old heat records on Mother’s Day.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), nine communities broke previous heat records on Sunday.

The Emerson and Dominion City areas seem to have made the most dramatic gains over their previous records.

Both areas hit a sweltering high of 37.8 C on Sunday – enough to surpass each area’s previous records of 30.9 C set just last year.

It was nearly as warm in Altona. That region saw the mercury rise to 36.7 C, comfortably besting the previous record of 30.6 C set in 1977.

Other areas that recorded record-breaking temperatures on Sunday – Deerwood, Melita, Pilot Mound, Portage la Prairie, Sprague, and Steinbach.
