Serious burns, asbestos exposure reported in workplace incidents

The provincial government is reminding employers to maintain safe work environments after five workplaces were prosecuted for health and safety violations.

Manitoba Growth, Enterprise and Trade’s Workplace Safety and Health released the list of violations Tuesday. Some incidents date back as far as 2013.

They include reports of serious burns and employees being exposed to asbestos.

The most recent incident happened on July of 2013. The province said a worker at Dunsire Building Services Ltd. fell from an 8 foot ladder while repairing a strip mall sign.

Officials said the worker was performing electrical work as an apprentice without being supervised by a certified journeyperson.

The province said the employer pleaded guilty in March of 2016 for failing to provide information, instruction, training and supervision for an apprentice. The company was ordered to pay $18,000 in fines and surcharges.
