More dollars on the table to enforce Winnipeg’s short-term rental rules

The City of Winnipeg could get some additional funding from Ottawa to boost enforcement of short-term rental rules.

The city’s public service said a grant of up to $767,499 is available through the federal government’s Short-Term Rental Enforcement Fund. The service recommends the city use this funding by adding up to three temporary staff members to the city’s short-term rental program.

The city changed rules regulating short-term rentals last year. As of April 1, those running short-term rental properties must have a business licence from the city that needs to be renewed annually. They’re also required to collect a six per cent accommodation tax for the city, paid quarterly.

A report from the public service said these new positions would support enforcement – ensuring rental properties in Winnipeg are following the new regulations.

This funding would also be used to enhance the existing reporting system and find gaps in the current bylaws.

The funding would bring in $360,659 in 2025/26, and another $406,840 in 2026/27 before expiring in March 31, 2027.

The city’s Community Services committee will speak about the issue during its meeting on May 2.

It will require final approval from council before a contract is signed for the grant.
