Colleen Bready’s forecast: Chance of snow showers, cool temps over May long weekend

Much needed rain continues to fall across southern Manitoba on Friday, courtesy of a Colorado low pressure system.

The southwest corner of the province remains under a rainfall warning Friday, first issued earlier in the week by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).

As of 8 a.m. Friday, ECCC reported many communities already received significant rainfall, with Carberry topping the list at 66.4 mm. Brandon, not under the rainfall warning, got 56.2 mm.

The weather agency forecasts another 10 to 15 mm for the region Friday.

Similar amounts are forecast for Winnipeg, while 5 to 10 mm of rainfall is expected closer to the wildfires burning near Lac du Bonnet.

Strong and gusting north winds will send temperatures falling in the southeast on Friday afternoon into single digits.

This same storm system produced multiple thunderstorms across the south Thursday, including in Winnipeg, and one landspout tornado near Sperling, Man., confirmed by ECCC.

Rain is expected to end overnight in Winnipeg and the southeast, but with overnight lows dropping close to zero, freezing rain or snow showers are possible before morning.

Meanwhile, an air quality alert issued by ECCC continues for eastern Manitoba, closer to the wildfires burning in the region. The warning has been ended for Winnipeg and surrounding regions.

The May long weekend will get off to cool and cloudy start across the south, before sunshine and warmer temperatures in the low teens return Sunday and upper teens on Victoria Day on Monday.
