Colleen Bready’s forecast: Air quality improves with a chance of much-needed precipitation

For a second straight day, air quality has improved enough Friday that Environment and Climate Change Canada has not issued any related alerts in Manitoba or northwestern Ontario.

Many communities in Manitoba will still experience some localized smoke, including Winnipeg. The weather agency’s air quality health index indicates the city is at moderate risk for poor air quality Friday.

The province also cautioned that with temperatures expected to rise in Manitoba, so does the risk of wildfires.

Wildfire zones in the northwest, including Flin Flon, will be dry Friday afternoon, with light winds and highs in the upper teens.

Some much-needed precipitation could be on the way soon, though. There is a good chance of showers overnight and on Saturday in the region. The odds of rain are even higher Saturday night and Sunday.

Conditions will be dry in wildfires zones in the southeast Friday through the weekend. The next meaningful chance of precipitation in the area is on Monday.

Otherwise, expect normal June conditions Friday in southern Manitoba and in northwestern Ontario, with sunshine or a mix of sun and cloud and highs in the low to mid-20s.

In the north, daytime highs will reach the upper-teens Friday. Most areas, including Thompson, Lynn Lake, Norway House and Island Lake, will be sunny. Other areas, including Flin Flon and The Pas, will cloud over.

Ahead this weekend, expect hazy, but otherwise sunny conditions on Saturday in Winnipeg with a high near 23 C.

Temperatures could rise into the upper-20s in the afternoon on Father’s Day on Sunday. Runners participating in the Manitoba Marathon in the morning should prepare for warm temperatures in the upper-teens with a mix of sun and cloud.
