‘Bring help already’: Homicide victim’s family calls for more support

The family of a Winnipeg homicide victim is calling for more supports to help navigate the justice system on the anniversary of her death.

The family of an Indigenous woman killed nearly one year ago is calling for more support for survivors of violence.

On Tuesday, family and friends of Ashley Isabella Murdock gathered at Central Park in downtown Winnipeg to remember and honour her life.

Murdock was found dead in an apartment on Kennedy Street on July 5, 2024 – the day before what would have been her 29th birthday. Five people were arrested in connection with her death.

Murdock’s family said each court hearing reopens painful memories.

“There’s apparently supports out there — so where are they? That’s what I’m asking. Bring help already. Stop this already. The families that are survivors — they are hurting,” said Deidra Telenko, Murdock’s mother.

Telenko said she wants to see real, tangible changes.

“I have to start seeing and helping make those positive changes happen — for resources, well-being checks and financial support for families. We’re survivors,” she said.

The march began at noon and ended at Wahbung Abinoonjiiag, a non-profit organization that provides community support and services for families.

“This walk is a way to honour Ashley’s life, stand in solidarity, and demand real change,” Telenko said in a statement.
