About 1,000 people currently without power due to wildfires: Manitoba Hydro

Approximately 1,000 people are currently without power in Manitoba due to wildfires, according to Manitoba Hydro.

A spokesperson for the Crown corporation said there has been “significant damage to Manitoba Hydro poles and power lines,” with some areas still inaccessible to safely perform damage assessments.

The spokesperson said that there are “hundreds of damaged poles across several communities.”

Roughly half of customers without power are said to be in Pukatawagan, with the other half in Nopiming Provincial Park.

“The repair time varies widely,” said the spokesperson. “In most cases, hours or days, in some more difficult areas, weeks.”

“Our repair crews are just returning to an area of Nopiming Provincial Park where they had started to make repairs last month but had to stop due to wildfires. It’s in very rugged terrain where materials will have to be brought in by helicopter.”

The spokesperson said crews have already been able to make some repairs throughout the province.

The provincial government’s latest fire bulletin said there are 25 active wildfires across Manitoba.
