Police chief search beginning soon, more on police helicopter

The Windsor Police Service has not chosen a new police chief just yet, mentioning Thursday the task will begin soon. Also, an update on the city's helicopter.

A recent police board meeting provided more information on the search for a new police chief and the police helicopter.

The board said the task of finding a police chief next month. Current chief, Jason Bellaire, announced his retirement in February.

Bellaire will remain in his position until November. When he retires, there will still be two years left in his contract, but he won’t be paid for those remaining years.

In June, a posting will be made for the position, ahead of a committee formation and interviews taking place in August.

“It’ll be interesting to do those interviews and get their perspectives,” said Jo-Anne Gignac, chair of the Windsor Police Board.

“So, these will be people who have experience in policing and just have that conversation in terms of what they see from the different areas of the country, as to what challenges might be.”

Looking at the police helicopter, Gignac said details are still being sorted out.

Details such as when the helicopter will arrive, which police agency logo will be on it, and how it will be used are all being worked out. Gignac expects to hear from the government “in the near future.”
