CKPS cleared in serious injury of man: SIU

The Special Investigations Unit said it found no reasonable grounds that two Chatham-Kent Police Service officers committed a criminal offence in the injury of a man.

A 52-year-old man was seriously injured on Aug. 12, after police responded to a domestic disturbance call at a home near Wedgewood Avenue and Tweedsmuir Avenue West.

Joseph Martino, director of the SIU, said the officers were within their rights to arrest the man “on the grounds he assaulted a woman and that he was in violation of curfew.”

The man was allegedly found hiding in a closet and sprayed officers with a beer.

The SIU said the suspect then refused to be arrested, when he was taken to the floor and his knees were struck. An additional knee strike was given when the officers and man were near the police car.

The man was taken to hospital with a fractured rib.

Martino said the force used was reasonable in the situation.
