A Personal Support Worker (PSW) is an unregulated healthcare provider who has been educated and trained to work with individuals who require assistance in everyday living.

This could include Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) which may consist of bathing, dressing, toileting, meal preparation and feeding, and any essential or personal assistance that may be needed.

A PSW is the eyes, ears, arms and legs for those they serve.

There are three accepted curriculums for Personal Support Worker education in Ontario: They are taught at community colleges, career colleges and board of educations.

If your PSW has not completed their schooling at one of these then they are not a Personal Support Worker.

PSWs are not regulated or governed, it is important to inquire and learn as much about your care provider as possible.

There is no such thing as a stupid question except: “Why didn’t I ask more questions?”

Any reputable PSW and their employer, if they have one, will have no problem giving you honest and professional answers.

But do not take their word for it, ask for proof, proof of schooling, liability insurance and WSIB (Work Safety and Insurance Board) coverage.

If these insurances are not in place you may be made accountable to any injuries to the PSW or damage caused by them.

Ask to see a recent police/vulnerable sector check. Remember, they are providing an intimate service to persons that are in vulnerable situations.
