Dr. LYNN MCDONALD

Professor, Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, University of Toronto; Director, Institute for Human Development, Life Course and Aging, University of Toronto. Dr. McDonald is the Scientific Director for the National Initiative for the Care of the Elderly (NICE).  In 2002 she was awarded the Governor General’s Golden Jubilee medal for her contributions to Canadian gerontology. Her research interests include work and retirement, violence against women and older adults, poverty and the homelessness and ethnicity and aging.  She is currently leading several projects funded by the Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HSRDC) and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) to help define and measure elder abuse, and on the best way to implement social pocket tools provided by NICE to address health and social issues associated with aging (e.g., elder abuse, mental health, financial literacy, dementia, etc.).  To learn more about Dr. McDonald's research, visit her project website at: http://www.kmpartnership.com.

NICE

The National Initiative Care for the Elderly (NICE) provides resources on dealing with elder abuse and seeks to raise awareness of the problem. This international network of researchers, practitioners, students and seniors dedicated to improving the care of older adults has helpful information and tools for detecting abuse at their website

The Canadian Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (CNPEA) is dedicated to the prevention of the abuse of older people in Canada.
