Brett Mitchell is an award-winning journalist who has been with Canada’s most-watched documentary series, W5, for more than 20 years. Since 2010, he has held the title of Senior Producer for the program where, in addition to field producing, he assigns and reviews stories, approves scripts, and co-ordinates the promotional rollout for each of the season’s weekly episodes.

The stories Mitchell has covered have taken him across Canada and to countries and regions around the world, including North Korea, Kenya, Kurdistan, Afghanistan, and the Arctic.

Mitchell has a Master’s degree in Journalism from the University of Western Ontario. He has also taught long-form broadcast journalism at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ont. and to a group of Vietnamese journalists in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Fluent in English and French, Mitchell is currently learning to speak Spanish. He is the proud father of two teenage girls. 

He has received a number of awards for his work including the Canadian Screen Award for Best News or Information Program (2017), the Radio Television Digital News Association awards for best long feature story and best investigative story (2017, 2019), a New York Festivals Gold Medal (2006) and the Beyond Borders Media Award (2009). Mitchell was also an integral part of the W5 team when the program took home the prestigious Gordon Sinclair Award.
