Woman fatally shot in Surrey; homicide investigation underway

Homicide: Woman's body, burning truck found A woman has been fatally shot in Surrey, and a burning truck found a ways from the crash may be an important clue.

Vancouver — Homicide investigators are in Surrey after a woman was fatally shot early Thursday morning.

Police were called to an alley on 75A Avenue at about 5:30 a.m. after getting reports of a single-vehicle collision. When they arrived, they found a 30-year-old woman with a gunshot wound.

Despite efforts from first responders, the woman died from her injures.

Police believe a second vehicle was involved in the shooting.

“That vehicle is obviously crucial for our investigation it could very well have contained the suspects. The very shooter responsible for this,” Sgt. Frank Jang of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said at a news conference Thursday morning.

Then in the afternoon, IHIT confirmed they are now investigating whether a truck found burning in rural Abbotsford this morning might be connected.

Meanwhile, RCMP remain at the crime scene in Surrey, searching for evidence. They put a drone up over the area this afternoon.

Homicide investigators are also seeking surveillance footage.

“If there’s a video in that area we are going to get it and we are going to review it but time is of the essence,” Jang said.

RCMP say that while the investigation is in its early stages, they do not believe the killing to be random. Jang said their priority is identifying the victim.

“Once we determine the identify of our victim, then we will have a lot of information to work with. Who she is her background, what is the possible motive behind this.”

The killing has left some residents in the area feeling unsafe.

“My emotion right now, it’s always worried and scared,” said Charo Papa who lives in the area.
