Suspect charged in Vancouver Island bank robbery

A man suspected of robbing a bank in Sidney, B.C., earlier this year has been charged, police announced Friday.

Charges of robbery and possession of stolen property were laid against 37-year-old Troy Burton on April 22, according to a news release from Sidney/North Saanich RCMP.

“Mr. Burton remains in custody at this time,” the detachment said in the release.

Online court records show Burton made his first appearance in Port Alberni provincial court on April 28. His next appearance is scheduled for May 21.

The robbery Burton is accused of occurred on March 24. Shortly after 2 p.m. that day, a suspect entered the Scotiabank at 2355 Beacon Ave., approached the teller and produced a note demanding cash, according to RCMP.

The following day, Mounties shared a surveillance photo of the suspect and asked the public for information and video to help with their investigation.

“Sidney/North Saanich RCMP would like to extend their appreciation to the many members of the Sidney community, particularly the local businesses and their employees, whose support, co-operation and assistance were integral in our ability to solve this serious incident,” the detachment said in its update Friday.
