Received a text regarding unpaid parking fees? It might be a scam

Police on Vancouver Island are warning the public about a text scam targeting people for unpaid parking fees.

According to the Campbell River RCMP, in the past few days “multiple community members” have reported receiving a text from someone purporting to be ICBC telling them of unpaid tickets.

The texts warn of service being suspended if the fines remain unpaid.

“These kinds of scams have become more common, and many people end up being duped,” said Const. Maury Tyre in the RCMP release.

If a text or email has been received from a corporate organization and there is any doubt over its legitimacy, Tyre advises not to interact with them or give out any personal information.

The simplest way to determine if the text or email is a scam is to contact the company directly, without clicking on the link the scammer has provided, says Tyre.

“Legitimate contact numbers are available on the back of your credit cards and on official company websites.”
