No bridge toll discount grinds trucker gears

Truck drivers are hauling a load of resentment after learning they will not be able to take advantage of toll discounts being offered to car drivers who take the new Port Mann Bridge.

Tolls for the bridge begin in December, but depending on when drivers register for a tolling account they are eligible for a discount until 2013.

But the offer won’t be extended to truck drivers like Jesie Patara, who owns and operates his vehicle and said drivers likely won't be paying the added toll from their own pockets.

“Unfortunately all of that cost is going to be passed on to the consumer,” said Patara, adding the impact could be significant.

“Like they say; ‘if you got it, it came by truck.’”

Representatives from the Ministry of Transportation said truck drivers can get a 50 per cent discount on the bridge toll if they travel at night.

The ministry said that discount will be a permanent offer.

But others in the industry said the lack of a discount isn't that big of an issue.

“I think overall the industry is quite pleased that the infrastructure is being built,” said Louise Yako of the BC Trucking Association.

“They will no longer be stuck in congestion as they are today.”
