Six years after one of the most notorious gang shootings in British Columbia, the Surrey Six trial is set to begin this morning.

Families of the two innocent bystanders, 22-year-old Christopher Mohan and 55-year-old Ed Shellenberg, are mourning their losses.

Eileen Mohan still thinks about how her life would be different if her son had not been in the apartment at the time of the shooting.

“I sometimes wonder what would it have been like having him here today. It would have been a beautiful, beautiful world together,” she said.

Mohan banked her vacation time over the past several years in preparation for the trial, and intends to be present for much of the court proceedings.

“From the beginning I wanted to know what happened, how did it happen?” Mohan told CTV News. “So I’m going there to sit down and represent my son, and to listen to how this happened, how did we fail?”

Shellenberg’s brother-in-law Steve Brown said he has long been waiting for closure.

“There’s absolutely no closure until everything is said and done for me,” he said.

According to the RCMP, the shooting was a “gangland execution fueled by drugs, gangs and guns”, and the four other men killed were involved in the local drug trade.

Cody Rae Haevisher, Michael Le and Matthew Johnston, all accused members of the Red Scorpion Gang, are charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Jamie Bacon is awaiting trial for conspiracy to commit murder.

A fourth man, who cannot be identified, already pleaded guilty to three counts of second-degree murder.
