TORONTO - The University of Toronto ranked highest of nine Canadian schools in a list of the top 200 universities worldwide.

According to the seventh annual Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, Harvard University is the number one university in the world, with U.S. schools taking 15 of the top 20 spots.

The University of Toronto took the number 17 spot, up from 29 in 2009, due in part to a change in the methodology used to calculate the rankings.

This year's report reduced the weighting given to a school's reputation, and the British-based publication focused on core measurements, which include funding put toward scientific research, number of papers published and number of doctorates awarded.

The other Canadian universities that made the list and their rankings were:

  • University of British Columbia (30)
  • McGill University (35)
  • McMaster University (93)
  • University of Alberta (127)
  • University of Victoria (130)
  • University of Montreal (138)
  • Dalhousie University (193)
  • Simon Fraser University (199)

Three Canadian schools that made the 2009 report where absent from this year's list. The University of Waterloo, Queen's University and the University of Calgary all ranked outside the top 200 for the first time in three years.
